Pillar's ToB Daily Updates - Stage 5

09 Sep 2021

Alderley Park → Warrington

Yesterday's Stage:

Wout van Aert reclaims the race lead after edging Julian Alaphilippe to stage four win on the Great Orme climb. Both riders dropped to the ground in exhaustion after dismounting at the finishing line of the gruelling 210 kilometre route with the savage hill-top finish. Michael Woods of Israel Start-Up Nation finished third on the day.  Race leader Ethan Hayter rode his own pace on the finishing climb to finished fifth, at eight seconds behind the stage winner. The young Brit now sits second in the GC, +2 seconds behind the new race leader Wout van Aert. The French man Julian Alaphilippe is third in the GC battle.

Today's Stage:

After a tough first four days of racing, today's stage will provide the peloton with an easier day of racing. Stage five is the first real opportunity for the quick men and the sprinter's teams to take the stage honours. Today's stage is the only stage with less than 2,000m of ascent in this year's Tour. There are some climbs early on in the stage, but these are far enough from the finish to cause any trouble for the sprinters.

Can Mark Cavendish take today's stage win to add to his winning streak already gained at this year's Tour de France?
