Pillar's Women's ToB Daily Updates - Stage 5
8th October 2021
Colchester → Clacton
Yesterday's Stage:
Lorena Wiebes of Team DSM sprints to stage victory at stage 4 of the Women's Tour. The young Dutch sprinter was fastest to the finish line, beating Chiara Consonni of Valcar-Travel & Service and Chloe Hosking of Trek-Segafredo to win her first Women's Tour stage. The stage was raced at high speeds due to no crosswinds, which meant that none of the early breakaway attempts were successful. Race leader Demi Vollering finished in the peloton to retain the leader's blue jersey and remains one minute nine seconds ahead of Juliette Labous. In the other jersey competitions, Elise Chabbey of Canyon SRAM Racing holds the SKODA Queen of the Mountains and Sheyla Gutierrez of Movistar holds the Eisberg sprints jersey.
Today's Stage:
The penultimate stage brings the riders into Colchester before the stage makes its way to the finishing line in Clacton. Colchester will also host the Grand Depart of next year's race. Stage five is the shortest stage of this years event at 95.5 kilometres, with a total elevation of 555 meters. This could be an easier day in the saddle, which could offer the riders some well-earned recovery time before the final stage. On today's stage, there are three SKODA Queen of the Mountain opportunities and two Eisberg sprints.

Stage 4 Post-Race Thoughts:
“Today was a flat an exposed race. However, there was not much wind about today, so it made the racing much simpler as there were no worries about crosswinds. Our objective today was to be as active as we can and look to get one of us in the move. However, the bunch was determined not to let anything go and keep it all together for a bunch sprint at the end. This made it for a fast day as the bunch was either chasing any move down or keeping the pace high to deter from attacks occurring.”
Stage 5 Pre-Race Thoughts:
“Tomorrow is another similar stage, with a few hills (QOMs) in that may make it a bit easier for a break to get away. Being a shorter stage (only 60miles) it is likely to be quite an aggressive race in terms of attacks. However, with another relatively flat course, it could easily come back down to a bunch sprint. Again the weather looks calm and should therefore not be a factor.”
