Pillar's Women's ToB Daily Updates - Stage 6

9th October 2021

Haverhill → Felixstowe

Yesterday's Stage:

Lorena Wiebes of Team DSM takes her second consecutive stage victory at this year's AJ Bell Women's Tour as she dominates the sprint on stage five. The Dutch sprinter was unchallenged in the sprint as she finishing almost two bike lengths ahead of world champion Elisa Balsamo of Valcar-Travel & Service and Marjolein van 't Geloof of Drops-Le Col s/b Tempur, who finished second and third, respectively. Stage five was dominated by a solo breakaway from British rider Hayley Simmonds of CAMS-Basso Bikes. She was the virtual GC leader on the road for a long time after making her break in the opening kilometres of the stage. The CAMS-Basso rider was eventually reeled in with 16 kilometres to go. There were no changes in the GC after stage five.

Today's Stage:

Today the AJ Bell Women's Tour finishes with a likely stage for the sprinters. The riders face a 155 kilometre stage that heads from Haverhill to Felixstowe. The last stage  includes two categorised climbs, one early in the stage and the last at the closing end of the day.

After six days of hard racing, it looks like Demi Vollering of Team SD Work will standing on the top step of the podium at Felixstowe.

Jess Finney: our eyes in the peloton

Stage 5 post-race thoughts:

“Today we had Hayley up the road all day. She did an amazing job, and we just kept safe in the bunch. The other teams clearly wanted it to be a bunch sprint so in the 2nd half of the race, just near the QOM, the pace went up another level. From about 30km it was lined out, holding on, hoping everyone in front would hold the wheel. Hayley was then caught and it was our job to keep her safe and make sure she finished in the bunch. We managed that well and was a great team performance today.”

Stage 6 Pre-race thoughts:

“Tomorrow is a long day, and I think a lot of teams will want it controlled, whilst a lot of others will want to try and make something of this last day. So it’s really hard to predict what will happen. I suspect it will get very aggressive towards the end as the fatigue kicks in.”
